Why Nova Scotia International Student Program?
Parents who want their child to pick up English through everyday life, rather than mainly in class, often look at provinces with fewer foreign students. The Nova Scotia program offers a province-wide structure and a reasonable fee.
- Language: students use English every day in a Canadian family's home.
- Budget: Nova Scotia is a low-cost province for both tuition and accommodation.
- Academic option: students have access to the IB in an affordable province.
Reasons: what makes the program stand out
Nova Scotia is known for its beaches and parks. Of the province's 372 schools, 65 high schools accept international students. The school year runs from September to June, with breaks in December and March.
- Province-wide structure: the program runs in more than 75 middle and high schools, so students can be placed in a community whose size suits them.
- Family safety: host families are screened for criminal records and child abuse registry entries, giving parents a concrete assurance about accommodation.
- IB: students can take a demanding curriculum in an affordable province.
- French Immersion: students can develop both official languages.
- Sports and clubs: there are more than 18 school sports, including hockey, curling, rugby, skiing and basketball, plus band, choir, drama and photography, which helps students make friends quickly.
- Experience: founded in 1997, the program has hosted about 1,500 international students, so its operations are well established.
- Duration options: full-year, single-semester and short-term programs let families choose the length that fits their plans.

Outcome: what it means for the student and family
This structure lets students learn Canadian culture from inside a family and build language skills naturally. For families, it means supervised accommodation and an accessible budget. Students under 17 travelling without a parent need a guardian in Canada, and recognition in the student's home country is handled by that country's education authority.
- Natural language learning: students use English continuously at home and at school.
- Safe accommodation: screened host families give parents confidence.
- Full school life: a wide range of sports and clubs speeds up social integration.
- Affordable cost: low fees make it easier to continue studying over several years.
