Why Vancouver School Board?
Families who want their child at the centre of a world-renowned city, in the same classrooms as local students, choose this board. Vancouver regularly appears on lists of the top ten cities to visit and live in. The board has 110 schools and accepts international students from grade 1 to grade 12. High school students are placed in schools in different neighbourhoods of the city.
- The city itself: for families who see living in Vancouver as part of the education.
- Wide course choice: for students who want to try different electives, from robotics to dance.
- Independent accommodation: for parents who want to choose the host family themselves through a private provider.
Reasons: what the Vancouver School Board offers
These points come from the board's CAPS-I page. The board does not list a special academy or program; its strengths are the city and the variety of courses.
- Shared education: international students study alongside Canadian students in public schools, so language and culture are picked up naturally.
- 16 high schools: students can choose among different neighbourhoods and school profiles.
- Course variety: a wide range of academic and elective courses is offered, including visual arts, languages, computing, business, music, dance and robotics, so programs can be tailored to each student.
- Language support: English language support is provided when needed.
- On-site services: each school has a library, gym, cafeteria, school nurse and counsellors.
- Extracurricular activities: photography, sports, drama, chess, skiing and community service.
- Easy travel: Vancouver International Airport serves the city, which makes international travel planning straightforward.

Outcome: a student who stands on their own feet in a big city
By studying alongside local peers under the same conditions, students develop both their language skills and their independent living skills. For families, the key factor is planning accommodation with the right provider.
- Cultural exposure: students experience daily life in a multicultural metropolis.
- Academic flexibility: students can choose a 10-month full year or a 5-month single semester.
- Strong network: 950 international students are spread across a student community of 50,000.
- Support: counsellors guide students on course selection and adjustment.
Benefit analysis: what the investment buys
The student works toward the BC Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Diploma), taught and assessed by certified Canadian teachers.
Every lesson, club and team runs in English, which turns English into a working language rather than a school subject.
A screened homestay family provides a private room, meals and daily support, and the district monitors the placement.
Clubs, teams and community activities let the student build a profile beyond grades.

Who it suits and what to consider
- Suitable profile: students who are ready for city life, mature enough to use public transit and highly self-disciplined.
- Accommodation and guardianship: the board does not arrange placement. Students aged 13 and over arrange accommodation with private providers, and the cost depends on the provider. The family must plan guardianship.
- Calendar and cost: final applications are due in May and November. Tuition is CAD 17,000 and health insurance is CAD 1,400. There is a non-refundable CAD 400 application fee and a CAD 100 assessment fee for high school. The current fees should be confirmed with the school before applying.
