Why Coast Mountains School District?
Families who like the idea of high school abroad but plan their budgets carefully, and who want an environment where their child really has to speak English, may consider this district. It is an option off the usual routes.
- Budget-conscious families: Those looking for one of the lowest tuition fees on the list.
- Students seeking full language immersion: Those who want a school with very few international students.
- Nature-loving teens: Those who prefer mountains, forests and outdoor activities to city life.
Reasons: the concrete features that make Coast Mountains stand out
The district has 19 schools, and international students are placed in two high schools. It lies among the coastal mountains and has a mild climate all year.
- Very few international students: Of about 4,200 students, roughly 30 are international, so students spend class time and breaks almost only with Canadians.
- Small communities: Terrace has about 16,000 residents and Kitimat about 8,000, so students become known quickly and integrate into the community.
- ELL in every school: The English Language Learner program is offered at all schools, so language support does not limit the choice of school.
- Outdoor and natural-resource learning: Lessons extend beyond the classroom through outdoor activities and hands-on learning about natural resources.
- Elective programs: Outdoor Education, Intro to Engineering, golf, choir, Jazz Band and Musical Production are offered.
- Affordable tuition: Annual tuition is CAD 13,000, which is lower than in large city districts, so families can plan on a smaller budget.
- Flexible duration: Full-year, single-semester and short-term options exist, so families can start with a short trial.

Outcome: what it means for the student and family
These conditions offer a different picture for a student who could easily get lost in large programs.
- Fast, necessary language development: Since few peers share the student's language, English becomes the only tool for daily life.
- Personal attention: The small scale lets teachers and the program team follow each student closely.
- A different Canadian experience: Students live as residents, not tourists, experiencing local culture and the nature of northern British Columbia.
- A more manageable total cost: Low tuition keeps the budget comfortable even after accommodation and insurance are added.

Who it suits and what to consider
- Suitable profile: Grade 10 to 12 students who are independent, adaptable and open to small-town life.
- Costs: On top of the CAD 13,000 tuition there is a CAD 300 application fee, a CAD 400 annual placement fee, CAD 1,200 per month for accommodation, CAD 1,100 for health insurance, CAD 300 for custodianship and CAD 750 for orientation and activities. The current fee should be confirmed with the school before applying.
- Location and program history: The district is far from Vancouver, and travel is through Terrace/Kitimat Airport. Since the program began in 2023, its track record is shorter than that of established districts. The final application deadline is in January.
