When Canadian language schools, high schools, colleges and universities start, and how far ahead families should apply for each.

“Are we too late?” It is one of the most common questions we hear, often from families who have just discovered Canada and fear they have missed their chance. The answer is usually no. Canada offers several start dates across different types of school, and knowing them turns anxious guessing into calm planning.

Here is how the calendar works, and when to apply for each option.

The Canadian school year

Canadian schools and most post-secondary institutions run their main academic year from September to June, with a winter break in late December and a summer break in July and August. September is the busiest and most popular start for every level of education.

Start dates by type of school

  • Language schools: new classes start almost every week, with courses from two weeks to a year or more. This is the most flexible option. See our language school guide.
  • Summer camps: run in July and August for ages 9 to 17, in one-week to four-week blocks. Visit our summer camps page.
  • High schools: most international students start in September. Many public school boards also accept students for the second semester, which begins in late winter, depending on space.
  • Colleges: many programs offer intakes in September and January, and some in May. Popular programs may only start in September.
  • Universities: September is the main entry point for undergraduate degrees. Some universities and programs also offer a January start.

When to apply

Our general advice is to start planning 9 to 12 months before the intended start date. Popular programs and homestays fill early, and some scholarships and funding options have their own deadlines.

  1. Universities: applications typically open in the autumn for the following September, and many deadlines fall in winter.
  2. Colleges: apply early, especially for health, computing and other high-demand programs that can fill before deadlines.
  3. High schools: apply several months ahead to secure the preferred school and a good homestay match.
  4. Language schools and camps: a few weeks to a few months ahead is often enough, but summer places, especially camp residences, go quickly.

Choosing the right start

The best start date is not always the earliest one. A student who needs stronger English may do better with a language course first, then a January or September program start. A high school student may benefit from arriving in September to join classmates at the beginning of the year. We plan the next step before the first one, so each date leads naturally to the next.
