Ten practical questions that separate a good Canadian language school from the right one for you, from accreditation to weekly cost.

Choosing a language school can feel surprisingly hard. Every website promises fast progress, friendly teachers and a great city, and from thousands of kilometres away it is difficult to tell which claims hold up. If you are comparing tabs late at night, you are not alone, and you are asking exactly the right questions.

The good news is that a few clear checks remove most of the guesswork. Use the ten points below to turn a long list of schools into a short list you can trust.

Quality and fit

  • 1. Accreditation. Look for membership of Languages Canada, which reviews schools across six areas, from curriculum to student services. It has 128 accredited members offering more than 160 programs.
  • 2. Program type. Decide whether you need General English, academic English, exam preparation or French. Each one is taught differently.
  • 3. Lessons per week. Full-time schedules usually range from 20 to 30 lessons. More lessons mean faster exposure, but also a higher weekly price.
  • 4. Level testing. A good school places you with a test on day one and reviews your level regularly, so you are never stuck in the wrong class.

Life outside the classroom

  • 5. City. Toronto and Vancouver offer energy and choice; Calgary, Victoria and Halifax feel smaller and often cost less day to day.
  • 6. Accommodation. Ask about homestay, residence and the placement fee. Homestay in our featured schools runs from about CAD 290 to 390 a week in 2026.
  • 7. Nationality mix. A varied classroom pushes you to use English, not your first language, during breaks.

Cost and the next step

  • 8. True weekly cost. Full-time English at our featured schools costs roughly CAD 395 to 480 a week in 2026, and many lower the weekly price for longer bookings. Add registration, materials and accommodation fees before you compare.
  • 9. Start dates and length. Most accredited schools start classes almost every week and run from two weeks to a year or more, so check that your dates fit.
  • 10. Pathway agreements. If college or university is your goal, ask whether partner institutions accept the school’s finished level in place of a separate English test. See our university pathway overview.

For parents, these points translate into safety, value and a clear plan. For students, they mean a school where you feel at home and actually use the language every day. You can compare current prices on our language school costs page or browse English programs directly.
