Hands-on, respected and in focus: how college trades programs work in Canada, and how Passage financing can help eligible students.

Not every student wants to spend four years in lecture halls. Some learn best with tools in their hands, solving problems they can see and touch. Yet families sometimes worry that a trades path is a second choice. In Canada, it is anything but.

Skilled trades are respected, well organised and an important part of the economy. They suit students who are practical, careful and proud of good work.

Trades you can study

  • Electrical: wiring, circuits, codes and safety for homes, buildings and industry.
  • Welding: joining metals using different processes, from fabrication shops to construction sites.
  • Carpentry: framing, finishing and building science.
  • Plumbing, HVAC and refrigeration: the systems that keep buildings comfortable and safe.
  • Automotive and heavy equipment: diagnosing and maintaining vehicles and machinery.

Where to study

Colleges and polytechnics run modern shops and labs that mirror real job sites:

  • NAIT in Edmonton: one of Canada’s largest apprenticeship trainers, with about 120 programs and 31 trades. Advanced Carpentry Technology lists CAD 22,050 for year one in 2026-27.
  • Conestoga College: a dedicated skilled-trades campus in Cambridge, Ontario.
  • NSCC: delivers most of Nova Scotia’s technical and apprenticeship training across 13+ campuses.

College programs give international students a structured, full-time way to learn the theory and shop skills of a trade. Canada also has a Red Seal program, an interprovincial standard of excellence that experienced tradespeople can work toward later in their careers.

Financing with Passage

Skilled trades are one of the four fields Passage focuses on. Eligible international students in select programs at partner colleges can apply for an education loan of up to CAD 65,000 for tuition, or tuition plus living costs, at a published fixed rate of 11.95% APR. Passage reviews and approves every loan under its own criteria, and Canadian Edu Centre is not a lender. Details are on our Passage page, and you can test numbers with the loan calculator.

Is a trade right for your child?

  1. Hands-on interest: do they enjoy building, fixing or taking things apart?
  2. Safety mindset: trades reward patience and attention to detail.
  3. Math comfort: measurement and calculation are part of daily work.
  4. Physical readiness: shop work can be demanding.

Trades careers can grow into supervision, inspection, estimating or running a business of your own. Many experienced tradespeople also go on to teach the next generation.
