Where to learn French in Canada, from big-city Montréal to immersive Québec City, with 2026 course examples and bilingual alternatives.

Many students dream of learning French but worry about the practical side: which city, which school, and whether they will actually speak French outside class or simply switch back to English. Parents often wonder whether a French program is a sound investment compared with a more familiar English course.

Canada offers something rare: real French-speaking cities in North America, alongside bilingual options for students who want both languages. Here is how the main choices compare.

Montréal: a bilingual, international city

In Montréal, French is the everyday language of shops, streets and public life, while English is widely heard too. That balance makes it a comfortable first step for many students.

  • ILSC Montréal: General and Intensive French, plus French with volunteering. In 2026, 24 lessons a week cost CAD 420, and the intensive option costs CAD 470 a week.
  • McGill School of Continuing Studies: a three-week summer course with 36 class hours, conversation practice and outings. The last published price we have is CAD 1,649 (2024); the 2026 fee is confirmed on request.

Québec City: deep immersion

Québec City is often described as North America’s most French-speaking city. For students who want French all day, with very little English to fall back on, it is a powerful choice.

  • Université Laval, École de langues: two five-week intensive summer sessions with cultural activities, plus year-round courses and certificate options. Costs are quoted on request.

Immersion can feel challenging in the first weeks, but it is also where many students make their biggest leaps in listening and confidence.

Bilingual options beyond Québec

French does not have to mean a stand-alone language course. Younger students can find bilingual surroundings in other parts of Canada:

  • Ottawa: the capital offers bilingual surroundings, and the local public school board runs international programs from Grade 9.
  • Nova Scotia: the provincial international student program includes French Immersion options in some high schools.

Explore these on our high schools page.

Choosing the right setting

For parents, the question is usually value and safety: a reputable school, clear costs and a supportive living arrangement. For students, it is about the experience: festivals, cafés, new friends and the satisfaction of ordering, joking and studying in another language. Both perspectives point to the same advice: match the city to the student’s starting level and personality.
