What a custodian does, which students need one in each province, and the questions parents should ask before choosing.

Sending a teenager to study abroad raises one question above all: if something happens, who is there? A school can teach, and a host family can care, but parents still want to know that a responsible adult in Canada has their child’s wellbeing in hand. That role has a name: custodian.

What a custodian does

A custodian is a responsible adult in Canada who looks after a minor student’s wellbeing on behalf of the parents. In practice, the role usually covers:

  • Emergencies: being the first call if a student is ill, injured or in difficulty.
  • School liaison: working with the school on attendance, progress and any concerns.
  • Living arrangements: making sure the homestay or residence remains a good fit.
  • Support for parents: keeping the family informed, especially across time zones.

Who needs one

Custodianship is for students under the age of majority, which differs by province. It is 18 in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Saskatchewan, and 19 in British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia. That means an 18-year-old in Vancouver may still need a custodian, while the same student in Toronto may not. Schools can set their own rules too, so we always confirm requirements with the school.

Who can be a custodian

Some families have a trusted relative or friend in Canada. Many others use an arrangement organised through the school board or a homestay provider. Several public programs build it into their packages: Ottawa-Carleton, Edmonton and Winnipeg include custodianship, which gives parents one clear point of responsibility.

Questions to ask

  1. Is the custodian reachable at all hours? Emergencies rarely follow office hours.
  2. How often will we hear from them? Agree on a rhythm of updates.
  3. How do the custodian, homestay and school communicate? The best arrangements work as one team.
  4. What happens during holidays? Check who is responsible when school is closed.

Peace of mind, by design

The custodian is one part of a wider safety net that also includes a vetted host family or supervised residence, school counsellors and regular progress updates. When each part is in place before departure, students can focus on learning and growing, and parents can follow their progress with calm confidence rather than constant worry.
