How CAIS accreditation works, what it checks, and how it helps parents judge independent schools they cannot visit in person.
When you search for private schools in Canada, you quickly meet a long list of names, beautiful campuses and confident promises. How can a parent who has never visited know which schools are genuinely excellent? This is a fair worry, and accreditation is one of the most useful answers.
What CAIS means
CAIS, Canadian Accredited Independent Schools, brings together more than 90 accredited independent schools across Canada. Membership is earned: schools must meet national standards and keep meeting them. About 27 CAIS schools welcome boarding students, while the rest serve day students.
How accreditation works
CAIS accreditation is a continuous process, not a one-time badge:
- Self-study: each school examines its own programs, leadership, student life and facilities against national standards.
- External peer review: a team of experienced educators from outside the school visits and tests its claims.
- Regular renewal: accreditation visits take place every five years, so quality is checked again and again.
For families, this means an independent check on things that are hard to judge from abroad: the quality of teaching, the care around students, and how the school is run.
Why accreditation matters for your child
- Confidence in standards: you are choosing from schools that have opened their doors to regular outside review.
- Student wellbeing: the whole school experience, not only academics, is part of what the standards address.
- University preparation: CAIS schools such as Appleby College, Upper Canada College and Ridley College are known for strong academic preparation.
- Community: many CAIS schools build an all-round education around arts, athletics, leadership and outdoor learning.
What it costs, and how to weigh it
CAIS boarding schools are a premium investment. Published 2026-27 international boarding fees include about CAD 90,800 at Lakefield College School, CAD 92,500 at Ridley College and CAD 105,000 at Brentwood College School, plus registration fees. Accreditation does not make one school right for every child; a quiet student may flourish at a lakeside school, while another needs the energy of downtown Toronto.
It is also worth remembering that a school outside CAIS is not automatically weaker. Public schools follow provincial standards, and many good private schools are well regarded too. Accreditation is a strong signal, and one of several we weigh alongside class size, location, boarding life and your child’s interests.
